Long-Rapids & Twin Falls Hydro Power Plants, Namewaminikan River

Namewaminikan Hydro Inc., an affiliate of AXOR, has developed, financed and constructed two run‑of‑river reactors with a total capacity of 10 MW on the Namewaminikan River, approximately 12 kilometres north of the community of Beardmore in the Greenstone Region in Ontario.

The Twin Falls generating station, located further upstream, was commissioned in March 2017, and includes a spillway, a rock in‑water intake, two fibreglass penstocks, and a powerhouse, is home to two vertical SAXO‑Kaplan turbines for turbining a maximum of 40 m3/s of water under 14.7 metres of waterfall. The Long Rapids Facility includes a rock‑fill dam, a spillway, a rock in‑water intake, two fibreglass penstocks, and a powerhouse that also houses two vertical SAXO‑Kaplan turbines. The project operates a 16.8 metres drop and a maximum flow of 43 m3/s.

Each of the sites has undergone a thorough impact study to reduce environmental impacts and maximize local economic benefits. The project is the result of a partnership with the three local Aboriginal communities that receive royalties on gross electricity production. Otherwise, two walleye spawning grounds with optimal conditions have been developed in the tailrace of each of the power stations.

An electricity purchase agreement with the Ontario Power Authority is in effect until 2057.
